    A straight seam can be measured with a ruler. For curves or the perimeter of a bag, it is more accurate to follow the stitching line with a flexible tape measure or a separate piece of thread and then straighten it to check the length. Remember to include corners where the stitching direction changes and any continuous sections around the perimeter.

    Apply the appropriate multiplier to the measured seam length, then make sure the calculated length also provides enough thread to secure the needles and hold them comfortably while stitching.

    Prepare Approximately Four Times the Length for a Standard Seam

    When the leather thickness and pricking-iron spacing are within the range you normally use, and the seam is neither unusually short nor long, approximately four times the seam length can be used as the basic starting point.

    For example, if the actual seam is 30 cm long, begin by calculating approximately 120 cm of thread. This is not an absolute formula. It is a starting point that should be adjusted according to the leather, thread, and stitching method you normally use.

    Even when two seams are both 30 cm long, the amount of thread they consume can differ depending on the leather thickness, stitch spacing, and number of corners.

    Prepare More Than Four Times the Length for a Short Stitching Section

    For a short seam, simply calculating four times its length may not provide enough working allowance to secure both needles and hold and pull the thread comfortably.

    A certain amount of thread is always needed for securing the needles and tightening the final stitch, regardless of how short the seam is. For short sections such as handle attachments or reinforcing stitches, prepare more than four times the seam length.

    Trying to reduce a small amount of leftover thread can result in running out before the short seam is complete. It is better to prioritise enough length for a secure finish than to save a small amount of material.

    Use Approximately 3.5 Times the Length for a Long Seam

    For a long seam such as the perimeter of a bag, approximately 3.5 times the seam length can be used as the starting point. Applying the full four-times rule to a long seam may create more thread than necessary, causing it to rub repeatedly against the workbench, clothing, and stitching pony.

    The longer the thread, the farther it must be pulled through each stitch, making friction and twisting more likely to accumulate. When using your usual leather thickness and stitching conditions, reducing the length to approximately 3.5 times the seam length can make a long seam easier to manage.

    However, if a long seam includes many thick sections or passes through several layers, do not rely on the 3.5-times calculation alone. Add extra thread to account for the increased thickness.

    Thick Leather Requires More Than the Basic Calculation

    Even when two seams have the same length, thicker leather increases the internal distance that the thread must travel with every stitch. Thread consumption also increases where multiple layers of leather, reinforcement, and lining overlap.

    For thick handles, strap attachments, and areas where several components meet, calculate the standard four-times length or the 3.5-times length for a long seam and then add an extra allowance. The safest way to determine this allowance is to consider the final leather thickness and the results of a test stitch.

    Test the Calculation When Using New Materials or Conditions

    When using a new leather thickness, thread size, or pricking-iron spacing, prepare a test piece with the same materials before applying the calculation to the finished item.

    Record the seam length of the test piece and the initial thread length. After stitching, measure the thread remaining on both sides. If too much thread remains, reduce the multiplier slightly for the next project. If there was not enough thread to finish comfortably, increase the allowance as needed.

    Why the Thread Should Be Locked Instead of Knotted

    Tying a knot directly behind the needle eye creates an area thicker than the needle shaft. As this bulky section repeatedly passes through the stitching holes, it can enlarge the holes, abrade the thread and lift the leather surface as the needle is pulled through.

    Run your fingers over the completed connection. It should not have a noticeable ridge or bulky lump. If the area behind the needle eye feels much thicker than the needle shaft, recheck the piercing position and the length of the doubled thread.

    5. Secure the Second Needle in the Same Way

    Saddle stitching uses one needle at each end of a single length of thread. Secure the first needle, check the thread centre and required length, and then attach the second needle to the opposite end in the same way.

    Do not treat a fixed number of piercings as a universal rule. Consider the thread material and thickness, the size of the needle eye and how smoothly the connection passes through the stitching holes.     Within the complete leather bag-making process—a zipper is not a closure added at the end. It is a structural component whose position, length, end finishing, and assembly sequence with the lining must be determined from the pattern-design stage.

    Overall Zipper Length and Usable Opening Length Are Different

    When determining zipper length, distinguish between the overall length of the zipper tape, the length of the zipper chain, and the usable opening length through which the slider can actually move.

    Even when the zipper tape is longer than the bag opening, the usable opening becomes shorter if both ends are folded or secured to interior components. The positions of the zipper stops, the full travel range of the slider, and the length of the leather pieces covering the zipper ends also affect the actual opening range.

    When ordering or cutting a zipper, do not rely only on its stated length. First determine exactly where the finished zipper should begin and end its opening movement.

    The resting position of the slider when the zipper is closed must also be checked. If the slider strikes a handle attachment or metal fitting, operating the zipper becomes inconvenient and repeated friction may damage the leather surface.

    For a bag in which left-to-right symmetry is important, the resting position of the closed slider should be determined during the design stage together with the zipper’s starting and ending points.

    A Zipper Installed Along a Curve Must Do More Than Match the Length

    A zipper installed along a straight line and one installed around a curve operate under different conditions.

    Zipper tape is flexible to a certain extent, but forcing it around a tight curve causes excess tape to gather on the inside while the outside is stretched. If stitched in this condition, wrinkles may form around the zipper or the zipper chain may twist and restrict the slider’s movement.

    Check the following when installing a zipper along a curve:

    • Does the zipper tape lie naturally along the curve?
    • Is the excess tape on the inside free from folds and overlaps?
    • Is the outer section of the tape free from excessive tension?
    • Does the slider pass smoothly through the curved section?
    • Do the left and right curves begin at matching positions?
    • Does the leather opening remain flat instead of rolling inward after stitching?

    Because the curve radius, leather thickness, and flexibility of the zipper tape vary, a single fixed formula cannot determine the correct length in every case. The most accurate method is to make a small test piece using the actual leather and zipper and then check how the zipper operates.

    Zipper Ends Must Be Structurally Finished, Not Simply Left Loose

    Zipper tape is thinner and more flexible than leather, so it can easily stretch during stitching. Pulling the thread too tightly or stretching the tape in one direction while stitching can cause ripples around the zipper.

    Secure the zipper and leather in stable positions before stitching and maintain a consistent distance from the edge to the stitch line. During stitching, open and close the zipper periodically to confirm that the slider continues to move smoothly.

    If the zipper is tested only after stitching is complete, it may be difficult to identify the section causing the problem. The zipper’s movement should be checked repeatedly during stitching, especially around curves and end sections where several materials overlap.

    Test Zipper Operation Before Closing the Bag

    Do not proceed immediately to the next assembly stage simply because the zipper has been installed. Once the body panel and gusset have been joined and the bag has been closed, access to the inside of the zipper may become difficult.
